Water and Wine

I know I am like wine;
I bring joy to bohemians on nights stolen by madness,
but I also grow sweeter with time.
And yes, if I’m at its peak, I become rare,
making you feel the pleasure of seeing an oasis in the Sahara.

And in contrast, you are like water;
colorless, yet healthy, essential.
You are the relief from the hangovers I cause.
You are what keeps the body alive.
But anyway…

If we join,
you dilute my wine, and I ruin your water.
Neither of us will serve any purpose.
My wine will no longer bring joy,
and your water will no longer quench thirst.
It will no longer hydrate.

We both get lost in the solution.

So I learned…
It’s better to let you go.
To follow the currents and explore the oceans.
Don’t worry — I’ll be fine.
I’ll be here,
at any bar counter, healing the wounds of lovers,
giving them the relief of realizing
that life is so much more than this state of being shackled to oneself.

I know we can’t escape this.
And nature doesn’t need to shout anymore.
Now I obey it with reason
if it merely looks at me.

Things are what they are; they cannot be changed.
Happiness can only be found
in those who accept their place.
